ICTIOLOGICAL COLLECTION

Collection Ichthyological History

The UFMT Câmpus Sinop fish collection was created in 2008 and was located in the building of the Southern Amazon Biological Collection (ABAM). Currently, the Ictiological Collection has been transferred to LIT with the curator of Dr. Lucélia Nobre Carvalho, who has the constant support of systematists from different specialties and from different Brazilian institutions (eg INPA, UFMS, MZUSP, UFRGS, UEM, UFPA ). The visits have allowed the taxonomic revision of several families of fish, and refined the identification of valid morphotypes.

The collection houses about 3,023 lots, with 19,309 specimens of 354 species enclosed in 38 families, all of continental freshwater, distributed in the following orders :, Myliobatiformes, Osteoglossiformes, Characiformes, Siluriformes, Gymnotiformes, Cyprinodontiformes, Cichliformes, Perciformes and Synbran. The most representative families are Characidae, with 1,094 lots, followed by Loricariidae, with 341 lots and Cichlid, 227 lots. The lots that make up the collection are sampled in the north of the state of Mato Grosso, in the middle of the Teles Pires river basin, an area lacking sampling, but with a unique diversity potential because it is in the ecotone Amazon-Cerrado biome and biogeographically close to the headwaters. the Xingu and Tapajós river basins.
